From Math to Metaphors: A Writer’s Evolution

Hello there! Namaste!
It’s your friendly neighbourhood wordsmith, Seethalakshmi (aka) Preethi! From math to metaphors, my journey to becoming a writer was like going from a calculator to a paintbrush. I didn’t start as a writer, but I guess you could say I had a way with words, like how a toddler has a way with crayons.
I hold a postgraduate degree in math, and my career began as a subject matter expert with Chegg. I authored solutions to US-based academic textbooks and later worked as a math tutor, handling diploma and engineering math.
I was content and happy, but then, my autoimmune condition (ITP) decided to have a party in my body, leaving me feeling like a deflated balloon. My body was saying, “Hey, let’s shake things up a bit and see what other talents you have hiding in there!”
Before I transitioned to become a freelance writer, I dabbled in a bit of Helen O’Grady! I taught drama at the Sanskriti school in Pune, and let me tell you, I had the time of my life unleashing my inner child with those kids. We danced, we acted, we played, and we had more fun than you can imagine! Sadly, my energy levels just couldn’t keep up with the job.
That’s when I stumbled upon my love for writing. I started small, crafting poems for functions like a poetry-generating machine. Also, it turned out to be the prime reason for this website to come to life. Soon enough, I was writing speeches and web copy, designing portfolios, and even transcribing audio and video for the Tamil Nadu government projects like a pro.
I didn’t have a literature degree, but who needs that when you’ve got a way with words as I do? And with each new opportunity that came my way, I learned and grew as a writer. While other people were hitting the gym, I was hitting the thesaurus – you can never have too many synonyms, right?
I’ve been flexing my writing muscle by regularly blogging about poetry, perspectives, sustainability, books, parenting, gardening, and my autoimmune condition. It’s like a workout for my brain – but with less sweat and more words.
While this website, Promising Poetry, is exclusively reserved for everything poetry, you can catch my other musings over at http://www.sustainablelearnings.com. It’s where I get personal and spill the tea on all my quirks and passions – from swimming to sustainable living to my crafting obsession with upcycling junk.
My journey as a writer has been a collaborative effort – from the writing courses I took to the communities like Kids book cafe and Blogchatter that helped me grow. And with the support of my readers and clients, I’ve been able to thrive in various writing niches and styles.
I’ve gone from crafting custom poems to being the literary equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife – proofreading, formatting, designing the cover page, and making other people’s writing shine. And hey, I even got credited for my work in the following books recently: Dr K. Radhabhai’s “Everlasting Efforts: A review of services to the blind”, Ms. Tenzin Pedon’s “Who Says Math is Not Your Cup of Tea?,” and Mr. Nagarajan’s “The Darshini Diaries”.
And now, here I am, ready to take on the world with my writing. So, if you need someone to craft some killer content, look no further. I may not have a cape or a secret identity, but I’ve got what it takes, sure to leave your readers wanting more- a way with words!
Also, don’t take my word for it — check out some of my works for yourself!
I promise these links aren’t viruses—they’re just samples of my writing.
